The current implementation does use Ajax. The problem isn't necessarily the script, it's the response time from Digg's server. The plan was to build in a caching system with the WP database, but I haven't got around to it yet. @Steve, I haven't upgraded to WP 2.5, so I wasn't aware that it was incompatible.
