Do All Blogs Support Trackbacks?

In short, no.

The trackback system was originally designed and implemented by the crew that made MoveableType. Since then, some blogging platforms have picked it up and some haven’t. Others have adopted the “pingback” - a similar system with some slight technical details.

So, does your blogging platform support sending and receiving trackbacks? Here’s a look at some of the more popular platforms.

Blog Platforms with Trackback Support
  • MoveableType created the trackback system - and they still support it.
  • WordPress supports trackbacks. However, you can only send a trackback while writing a “Post,” not a “Page.”
  • Typepad appears to support trackbacks.
  • ExpressionEngine supports trackbacks and auto-discovery.
Blog Platforms that Don’t Support Trackbacks by Default

In most cases, you can add trackback support with a module or plug-in, but these don’t support trackbacks with the default set-up.

  • Blogger. This is probably the most popular system that doesn’t support trackbacks. You can get an add-on called “Halo Scan” to implement trackbacks.
  • Joomla. You can get support with the Jom Comment module (version 1.7 or later).
  • Drupal. There’s a conveniently named “trackback” module.

So there you have it.

Most sites have trackback support or could have it. However, Blogger is a noteable case of a system that doesn’t support trackbacks by default.
